It was a long weekend. The kids were off half a day Friday and off for President’s Day as well. Sunday was cold and rainy so I told the kids we would be cleaning up the playroom. What should always be just a 30 minute job once again turned into a 2 hour ordeal because we can’t seem to put our toys away in their designated spots.
We’ve been down this road before. Every couple of months I walk into the playroom and open up doors and bins and then the yelling begins. ”Why is this in here?!” ”Who put this DVD in the Lego box?!” ”Why are the crayons not in the box? You know the dog will eat them if you leave them laying all over the floor!” ”Why is this baby doll’s face purple!”. ”Dirty tissue on the floor…ARE YOU KIDDING ME!”
Then, I explain, for the 50th time, that if you put your toys away properly after you are done playing with them, then we wouldn’t have to go through this every other month. If you take 2 minutes to put it away we won’t have to spend 2 hours cleaning it all up later.
Since my little one can’t read, I decided to print out pictures and tape them to the bins. I asked the kids to help me pick out the pictures, printed them off and taped them on the bins.
We have coloring books and crayons, instruments, Toy Story toys, electronics, cars, and misc. Everything has a place, and everything in its place!
Well….maybe not…..
I don’t even want to know where the crayons are.

I don’t know if a clean playroom is in the cards for any parents! Sorry
. But great idea with the picture labels. I volunteered in a kindergarten class, and that’s what they did. I would say consistency is the advice. If you make them clean up every time, then they’ll eventually get it. If we let them slide once, they’ll always slide by. Good luck!
